Bread Halwa is a quick Indian dessert made by frying bread pieces in ghee and cooking them with milk and jaggery or sugar. It is a great way to use leftover bread and can be prepared in less than 20 minutes.
Ingredients
- Bread slices – 6 (white or brown)
- Ghee – 4 tbsp
- Milk – 1 cup
- Jaggery (grated) – ¾ cup (or sugar)
- Cardamom powder – ½ tsp
- Cashews – 10 (chopped)
- Raisins – 1 tbsp
- Water – 2 to 3 tbsp (if needed)
Preparation Method
- Remove the edges of the bread slices (optional).
- Tear or cut the bread into small pieces.
- Heat 2 tbsp ghee in a pan and fry cashews and raisins until golden. Remove and keep aside.
- In the same pan, add remaining ghee and add bread pieces.
- Fry on low flame until the bread becomes crisp and golden.
- Add milk and mix well. Cook until bread becomes soft and absorbs the milk.
- Add grated jaggery and mix continuously on low flame.
- Cook until the mixture thickens and leaves the sides of the pan.
- Add cardamom powder, fried cashews, and raisins.
- Mix well and switch off the flame.
- Serve warm.

- Always cook on low flame after adding jaggery to avoid burning.
- You can mash the bread slightly for a smooth halwa texture.
- Adjust sweetness according to taste.
