Potlakaya Telaga Pindi Kura is a traditional Andhra home-style recipe made with snake gourd (potlakaya) and telaga pindi (sesame oil cake powder). Telaga pindi gives the curry a unique nutty flavor because it comes from the sesame seeds after oil extraction.

This dish becomes even more delicious with the addition of garlic and chana dal, which add aroma and a slight crunch. It is a simple everyday curry that pairs perfectly with hot steamed rice and a little ghee. Many Andhra households prepare this quick and healthy dish for regular meals.

Ingredients

  • Potlakaya (snake gourd) – 2 cups (finely chopped)
  • Telaga pindi (sesame oil cake powder) – 3 tbsp
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Chana dal – 1 tsp
  • Dry red chilies – 2
  • Green chilies – 2 (slit)
  • Garlic – 10 cloves (crushed or roughly chopped)
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Red chili powder – ½ tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp (chopped)

Preparation Method

Step 1: Prepare the Potlakaya

Wash the snake gourd thoroughly.
Lightly peel the skin and cut it lengthwise.
Remove mature seeds if present and chop into small pieces.

Step 2: Prepare Tempering

Heat oil in a pan or kadai on medium flame.

Add:

  • Mustard seeds
  • Cumin seeds

Let them splutter.

Add:

  • Urad dal
  • Chana dal

Fry until the dals turn light golden.

Then add:

  • Dry red chilies
  • Curry leaves
  • Green chilies
  • 10 crushed garlic cloves

Saute for about 30–40 seconds until aromatic.

Step 3: Cook the Vegetable

Add chopped potlakaya to the pan and mix well with the tempering.

Add:

  • Turmeric powder
  • Salt

Cover with a lid and cook on medium flame for 8–10 minutes until the snake gourd becomes soft. Stir occasionally.

Step 4: Add Telaga Pindi

Reduce the flame to low.

Sprinkle telaga pindi powder slowly over the curry while mixing continuously so it coats the vegetable evenly.

Add red chili powder and mix well.

Cook for another 2–3 minutes until the curry becomes slightly dry and flavorful.

Step 5: Garnish

Add chopped coriander leaves and mix gently.

Serve hot.
